A DBA stands for "Doing Business As," and it is the registration of a business trade name. 

For example, if your business name is "Ultra Super Unique Company," you will need to file a DBA. 

A Federal tax id is not a business license or a DBA.  

However, you most likely need a dba Businesses if using a name other than the owner's name.  If so, you are required to register a DBA / Fictitious Business Name Certificate. Note that you can incorporate or form an LLC instead of filing a DBA. If you are an LLC or Corporation you don't need a dba.

DBA, short for "doing business as", is a filing that shows that business under a different name. DBA's are commonly referred to as a fictitious business names, assumed business and trade names. 

Users of a trade name other than their last name or the corporation's or corproration's legal name.
